The first thing most people do when they're seriously considering a small business is type "[whatever idea] startup costs" into Google. What they get back is usually a ten-line list that adds up to a single number. $5,000 to start a candle business. $12,000 for a food truck. $850 to start a slime brand.
That number is almost always wrong.
It's wrong in three specific ways that compound on each other, and once you see them you can't unsee them.
The defaults are hardcoded and go stale immediately
Most cost calculators on the web were built one time, published, and then forgotten. Someone plugged in marketplace fees and shipping rates that were accurate on the day they wrote the article. Two years later, Etsy bumped its transaction fee, the shipping carriers changed their pricing tiers twice, TikTok Shop launched and rewrote what selling to creators looks like, and the calculator still returns the same number it returned in 2023.
A founder who lands on that page in 2026 gets numbers that were true in 2022. They make a decision on those numbers. They are starting at a financial disadvantage from the first hour.
This is not a small problem. The whole reason a cost calculator exists is to give you a number you can act on. If the number is two years stale, every decision built on top of it is two years stale too.
They don't model how you actually sell
Real DIY businesses sell across multiple channels with completely different economics. A handmade brand might run 40% Etsy, 40% TikTok Shop, and 20% on their own website. Each channel has its own fee structure, its own conversion rate, its own customer profile, its own shipping rules. Etsy charges a listing fee and a transaction fee. TikTok Shop has a different fee structure entirely. Your own site only pays what Stripe charges (2.9% + $0.30), but you have to drive every single visitor yourself.
A generic calculator averages all of that together into a single "platform fee %" assumption. That's the calculator equivalent of saying "the average American makes $X per year." Useful for cocktail-party math, useless for planning a business that lives or dies by margin points.
They miss the levers that actually matter
This is the most expensive failure of the three. Every vertical has three to five specific cost dynamics that the generic calculators don't even ask about. A few I've spent time with:
Slime brand: summer heat-pack shipping. Slime ships poorly above 80°F. If your fulfillment window includes June through September and you don't budget for cold packs and overnight shipping, your COGS goes sideways for three months. I have yet to see a generic "DTC startup cost" calculator that models this. It is a real, recurring line item that meaningfully changes whether the business is viable.
Cleaning service: route density. Your cost per clean depends entirely on how many jobs you can do in a row in the same neighborhood. A cleaner doing four jobs in a two-mile radius makes roughly three times the margin of a cleaner doing four jobs spread across town. Generic service-business calculators treat "supplies and labor per clean" as a fixed cost. It is not.
House flipping: property tax burden varies 7x between U.S. states. The same $300,000 flip has a holding-cost profile that differs by more than $600 per month depending on which state you're flipping in. Hawaii has the lowest effective property tax rate in the country; New Jersey has the highest. A calculator that asks "average holding cost" without asking "what state" is pretending state law doesn't exist.
Each of these is a single line item that, if you get it wrong on day one, costs you real dollars every month for the life of the business. They are not edge cases. They are the levers that actually determine whether a vertical works.
What a calculator should actually do
The fix is not "make a smarter generic calculator." A smarter generic calculator is still generic, and the failure modes are baked into the format itself.
The fix is two things together.
First, build one model per vertical, hand-tuned to the actual levers that move that specific business. Not a slider for "marketing budget," a slider for "creator collaboration spend per drop" if you're modeling a slime brand. Not "platform fees," but a breakdown across Etsy, TikTok Shop, and your own site, each with their actual current fee schedules. Not "property tax," but state-aware property tax. The model has to understand the business.
Second, keep the defaults alive. Hardcoded numbers are the original sin of every cost calculator on the web. The fees and rates and shipping costs that define every vertical's economics shift constantly. The only way for a calculator to stay accurate over time is for the defaults to live in a database that gets updated when the world changes, not in a static blog post that gets published once and never touched again.
Why I built it this way
This is the philosophy behind StartupLenz. Each of the ten verticals we model right now has its own model engine and its own set of vertical-specific inputs. The defaults for things like marketplace fees, materials prices, shipping cost ranges, and state-level property tax all live in a database. There's a public page at /pulse where anyone can see what's been updated and when. When Etsy bumps a fee, every user gets the new number on their next page load. When inflation moves materials costs across the indie maker space, the slime, candle, and handmade defaults get updated to reflect it.
There is no static blog post that captures any of this for long. The information has to be alive.
I don't think this approach is the only way to solve the calculator problem. There are smart people building good things in this space. But I do think the generic calculators that dominate the top of the search results today are quietly making it harder for new founders to plan. They give people numbers that sound authoritative and act treacherous.
What to do this weekend

Open whatever calculator you're using, ask yourself two questions: do the defaults look like 2026 or 2022? And does the calculator know what business you're actually trying to start?
